Masia Cal Saumell is a charming and historic 18th century Catalan farmhouse nestling amongst the beautiful vineyards of the celebrated Penedes cava and wine producing region, and yet only 50 minutes by car from Barcelona airport and 25 minutes from Sitges and the Mediterranean coast.

Masia Cal Saumell enjoys a peaceful and privileged location amongst the vines and offers the perfect venue for a rustic chic style wedding, or for large families or groups looking for a more authentic wine country experience as a refreshing change from the usual beach orientated holiday.

Masia Cal Saumell offers 350 sqm of traditional style living space, which has been thoughtfully and carefully restored by the current owners using only the very best natural materials.

Rustic original features such as exposed wooden beams, terracotta floor tiles, juliet balconies and stone walls have been restored and cleverly blended in as enhancements, along with contemporary furnishing, so that the character of the old farmhouse is preserved but without compromising on modern standards of guest convenience and comfort.

The 2,000 sqm of outside space at Masia Cal Saumell is equally impressive with the main feature being the superb 11m x 3m private swimming pool which enjoys sweeping views across the vineyards of the Penedes and the legendary Monsterrat mountain in the distance.

Masia Cal Saumell is conveniently located just outside the wine producing town of Vilafranca del Penedes, where there are direct trains to Barcelona city centre. It’s only a 20 minute walk from the small village of Les Cabanyes where there is a bakery and a couple of cafes.

There are numerous good quality restaurants as well as wine and cava bodegas within an easy walk or very short drive, and guests can enjoy unlimited outdoor activities with walking, hiking, mountain biking, horse riding and quad biking right on the doorstep.

INTERIOR

Masia Can Saumell offers 350 m2 of beautifully living space arranged over 3 floors and comfortably accommodating up to 14 guests.

The masia is entered through impressive rustic old doors into a spacious open entrance hall with beautiful high ceilings, restored polished beams and flooring. The entrance hall offers access to all of the communal living spaces including a lounge dining space, a modern kitchen and an annex housing a bedroom and additional living space.

Lounge / Dining Room

The lounge area has three comfortable sofas and an armchair and TV. There are three sets of french windows leading out to a beautiful courtyard and BBQ area. The large french windows flood the lounge and dining areas with bright Mediterranean light.

The dining area features a large rustic dining table with seating for up to 8 guests. There is a possibility of adding extra dining space for up to 14 guests if required.

Kitchen

The open-plan and contemporary style kitchen is fully equipped with modern appliances including oven, induction hob, fridge freezer, microwave, dishwasher, coffee machine, toaster and all utensils required to make it home from home. A large breakfast bar overlooks the cooking area and provides another space in which to enjoy a drink or snack.

Annex

The annex is accessed through an arch near the entrance hall and this is where the first of the 6 bedrooms is located. This is a small double. There is also an additional living room which can be turned into a double bedroom (6th) if required to provide additional sleeping. This room has views to the front of the house and a wood burner for those cooler out of season evenings.  

The annex also has a well equipped kitchenette with fridge-freezer and a conveniently located guest bathroom with shower and toilet.

1st Floor

Stairs up from the entrance hall lead into a large, open-plan lounge area which is tastefully furnished with three sofas, an armchair and coffee table arranged around the fireplace. There is also a desk and chair plus a small reading corner with a comfortable chair and selection of books creating the perfect space for some quiet contemplation.   

3 of the 6 bedrooms and 2 of the 3 bathrooms are located on this level and are accessed directly from the living room.

Top Floor

The top floor is taken up by a huge and attractive open-plan space with triple aspect windows, offering a bright and spacious suite for up to 4 guests. The suite has a large and comfortable double bed, double wardrobes, air conditioning and a sofa bed.  

There is also access to a small private terrace with table and chairs offering stunning views over the surrounding vineyards and the famous Montserrat mountain.

BEDROOMS AND BATHROOMS

At Masia Cal Saumell there are 6 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms configured as follows;

Bedrooms

There are 5 spacious bedrooms each one beautifully decorated with its own unique theme. In addition, a lounge in the annex on the ground floor provides an optional 6th double bedroom 

Bedroom 1 – Top Floor – spacious suite with a 150cm x 200cm double bed, sofa bed and double wardrobe and fireplace. There is also air conditioning and a lovely balcony with views across the vineyards and to Monsterrat. Use of bathroom at the bottom of the stairs.

Bedroom 2 –  1stFloor – Large double with a 160cm x 200cm bed, beautiful feature mirror, dressing area and shared en-suite. 

Bedroom 3 – 1stFloor – Large double with 140cm x 200cm bed. This room has attractive high beamed ceiling and low level wardrobes. Views across the vinyards.

Bedroom 4 – 1stFloor – Large double with 140cm x 200cm bed.  Low level wardrobes and desk. Views over the front courtyard and swimming pool.

Bedroom 5 – Annex –  Small double bedroom.

Optional Bedroom 6 – The living room in the annex has a sofa bed and can be made into a double bedroom if required.

Bathrooms

Bathroom 1 – Large feature bath with shower, double wash basin and toilet. Located on the 1stfloor and used by the top floor suite and Bedroom 3.

Bathroom 2 – Large feature bath with shower, double wash basin and toilet. Located off the living room and for use by Bedroom 2 and 4.

Bathroom 3 – Located in the annex – shower, washbasin and toilet. For use by bedroom 5/6 and communal areas.

GARDENS & OUTSIDE SPACES

Masia Can Saumell offers 2,000 sqm of attractive outside space providing the perfect location for peace, relaxation and privacy with the beautiful back drop of the vineyards and rolling hills of the Penedes wine region.

The centrepiece of the outside spaces has to be the fantastic 11m x 3m swimming pool; complete with a water feature and wooden decking offering plenty of space for lazing in the warm Mediterranean sun.  

There is a shaded chill-out area close by, furnished with comfortable low level seating and tables, perfect for sitting and enjoying the sunset or escaping from the hot midday sun.

A covered outside space with feature arches that connects the main house and annex provides another perfect spot for entertaining or events with fantastic views of the surrounding vineyards. This area can also provide shaded parking during the summer if required.

In addition to the above there is a delightful enclosed courtyard that can be accessed from the living room or the front of the masia. This offers an alternative space for al fresco dining, entertaining or simply relaxing with a drink in the evening.

THINGS TO DO

Masia Cal Saumell provides a wonderful haven of peace and tranquillity amongst the rolling vineyards of the Penedes for large families or groups of friends to holiday together, as well as offering a wonderful space for celebrations and corporate gatherings. However, there is also so much to experience and enjoy in the local area for all members of the party.

Despite its peaceful setting the location of the masia makes it possible for guests to enjoy unlimited opportunities for outdoor activities with walking, hiking, mountain biking, horse riding and quad biking right on the doorstep.

From the house there are numerous walking trails through picturesque vineyards and woods with typical Mediterranean vegetation. 

Wine and cava tasting visits can be arranged at the numerous Bodegas (wineries) that surround the masia – some within walking distance. The legendary Cava Houses of Freixenet and Cordoniu are close by and offer fascinating and insightful tours. 

The wonderful cosmopolitan city of Barcelona with its world-class attractions is only a 50-minute drive. For those looking for more energetic distractions the nearby Mediterranean coast with its golden sandy beaches and numerous marinas offers unlimited opportunities for water based sports and boat rentals. 

There is a choice of theme parks and attractions within an hour or so drive including Port Aventura, one of the biggest in Europe. In the winter and spring the nearest ski resorts of the Pyrenees are within a 2-hour drive.
